Presidential hopefuls arrived in Iowa for the annual state fair – an opportunity to make their stump speeches and connect with voters in the country’s first-in-the-nation caucus state. A wildfire has devastated the island of Maui destroying most of the historic town of Lahania. Torrential rains caused a mudslide in northwest China, leaving at least 21 dead. Shooting stars lit up the night sky during the annual Perseid meteor shower which takes place every summer as earth passes through a cloud of dust particles from a comet.
