Why Is it Important to Do Volunteer Work?

Volunteering is a way to gain a lot of skills that can be transferred into a workplace. These skills include; confidence, communication, responsibility, teamwork and innovation. Becoming a volunteer will also provide you with experience which is great for personal gain, but it will also be a good addition to your resume as it will help you to stand out, as it has allowed you to network and meet new people and more opportunities.

Most importantly, from the process of volunteering, you will gain a sense of personal satisfaction gained by assisting another person which will enhance your social awareness.

The possibilities of volunteering are endless. But really, What are the benefits of volunteering?  What can we get out of volunteering our time, effort and sometimes even our resources?

Here are 5 benefits of volunteering (believe me, there are more).

  1. You get to help those who need it. This is the obvious benefit, right? But it’s also the most important part. As a volunteer, you have a great opportunity to give back in any area that is important to you. What passion could you pass on to others?
  2. Volunteering is great for your mental and even physical health. Not only does volunteering boost self-confidence and happiness, but it has also been found that people who volunteer have lower mortality rates than those who don’t.
  3. Volunteering can teach you the social and networking skills that you will need as an adult. Volunteering can teach teens how to network and build a list of important contacts. The people you volunteer with are also great candidates for recommendation letters. These are the people who have seen how you interact with others in social situations and how you handle new challenges.
  4. Volunteering lets you see how others experience the world and opens your eyes to something new. From volunteering with animals to giving food at animal shelters, volunteering can expose you to very new experiences that you may not have known otherwise. Having new experiences can help you discover a new passion, and gives you the contacts to pursue that passion.
  5. Make your resume shine. Volunteer experience can set you apart from other applicants for job and school applications. Your volunteer experience shows that you are ambitious, that you care about your community, and that you are willing to work to affect change. These are great qualities that recruiters and admissions officers look for in a potential student or employee.

Volunteering is more than an opportunity to make a positive impression on college admissions departments; it’s also a way to explore the world, learn from new cultures and perform enriching public service. Volunteering is a great way to gain as much as you give.

If we want to volunteer but don’t know where to start; we can always check out different organizations where they could use all the volunteer help they can get. These could be helping save animals; making the elderly feel loved and happy again; or we can simply check out our own community and see where we can help.

We don’t have to start big when considering Why Is Volunteering Important and where we can share whatever we have to the less fortunate. Volunteering to help a friend; a family member; giving our time to school activities; and even simply helping someone at random are already good acts of volunteering.

There are infinite ways for us to do volunteer work; we need only be open to our surroundings and really observe what goes on around us. Before we know it, we could already be in the middle of fund raisers; or helping those struck with natural calamities rebuild their lives again. Volunteering is a positive chain that goes around making the world a happier place for everyone.
